Chapter Twenty-Four
Queenie and I got the last table in the back of the mart deli conveniently located ladiesâ room adjacent. We settled into our seats at a tiny two-top meant for contortionist midgets and gave our regular server Laura our order.
Queenie slurped iced tea and frowned. âWhaddya make of Louis and Ronnie using one another as punching bags?â
âMy guess is Bunnyâs murder was a collaborative effort and it went off the rails. And now theyâre trying to save their own asses by fingering each other.â
Queenie squeezed a lemon wedge into her tea glass. âDid Martin fire them?â
I blew out my cheeks. âHe should, but I bet he didnât.â
Queenie crossed her eyes. âWhy not? After all the shenanigans theyâve pulled, if I were Martin, those two clowns would be out on the curb with the trash by now.â
âThey may not last past this season, but for now, a statement of a united front to the market is the smartest thing Martin can do to minimize the mess those two morons made.â
Queenie wrinkled her brow. âIs Detective Martinez gonna arrest one of them?â
I bit my lip. âNah, at least not now. Martinez canât wrap his arms around the concept the killer could be a he instead of a she. Unless one of them confesses or a smoking gun magically appears, Martinez isnât gonna arrest either one of them.â
Queenie said, âOn my way to meet you, I walked past Clothing Concepts. The construction crew must have worked all night. Itâs like the fight never happened. No sign Ali and Frasier had torn the place apart.â Queenie wiggled her brows. âMaybe now someone can locate the smoking gunâ¦â
****
Queenie wrapped her fingers around the door handle. âShall we?â
I took a step closer. âNo time like the present.â
Queenie pushed the glass door and surprisingly, it opened. She waved me through. âAge before beauty.â
I called, âHello? Anybody home?â
Nothing.
Queenie asked, âIf nobodyâs here whyâs the door open?â
Good question.
I eyed the vacant reception desk. âWhereâs the mousy-faced receptionist?â
Queenie motioned to the hallway. âGone. After the first punch was thrown, she duck-walked around Louis and Ronnie and ran out the door. She called human resources from home to quit, told them to mail her paycheck, and swore sheâd never step foot in the showroom as long as those two maniacs were there.â
I groused, âIf the two maniacs are in the back, theyâre deaf as doornails. Donât they hear us yelling?â
Queenie sniffed, âOr, more likely, the two jerks are ignoring us.â She motioned to the entrance. âThey should put a bell or a buzzer or something on the door.â Queenie giggled. âCan you imagine Sue Ellen coming in and the reception desk is vacant? She yells hello and nobody drops what theyâre doing and jumps out to greet her? Whaddya think sheâd do to those two clowns?â
The thought made me shudder. âLetâs check if either of the golden gloves is present.â
âIf they are, why are we here?â
I arched my brows. âConcerned neighbors checking in on them?â
Queenie made the gag sign. âAnd if not, what are we looking for now?â
âDunno.
